How Do You Have To Change Your Life To Be Your Authentic Self?

The hero journey is not really about how you have to change your life so that you become something you never were before. It is about becoming who you truly are.

In Joe Versus The Volcano, the hero in Joe—Joe’s authentic self—had gone into hiding because Joe was afraid.

How Joe Became Afraid

We find out in the session with Dr. Ellison that Joe had worked in the fire department. He left the fire department because he didn’t feel good. Dr. Ellison diagnoses Joe’s problem this way. Read more…

The Life Changing Gift Of Knowing You Will Die

As a character in the hero journey story of Joe Versus The Volcano, Dr. Ellison is the paradoxical mentor who gives the hero an essential gift that makes the journey possible.

The Mentor’s Gift In The Hero Journey

As a mentor, Dr. Ellison is both a liar and a truth teller. His money story is that he sold his soul to Mr. Granamore and is willing to lie to Joe with a made-up diagnosis. But the story is not about Dr. Ellison, and the tradeoffs he made to be Mr. Granamore’s lackey, to be willing to trade his integrity as a physician for the benefits of being Mr. Granamore’s private—and presumably well-paid—doctor. Can You Change Your Life With Sweet Vermouth And A Twist?

The previous post,  Can A Groundhog Teach You To Be A Hero?, ended with these words.

“In Phil’s case, “getting it right” means changing pronouns from his self-absorbed first-person perspective. It is no longer all about Phil. Over countless repetitions of the day, Phil changes his perspective from what he wants for himself, to what he can do for others. His pronouns change from the self-focused “me, myself, and I” to the other-focused second and third person pronouns, “you” and “they.”     Read more…

Can A Groundhog Teach You To Be A Hero?

February 2, 2011 is the 125th Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, a holiday created by a story.

Traditional Stories

“Legend has it that if Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his temporary burrow—a simulated tree stump at the rural site of Gobbler’s Knob—on February 2 and sees his shadow, winter weather will continue for six more weeks across the United States. But if Phil doesn’t see his shadow, then spring temperatures are just around the corner” (Groundhog Day 2011: Punxsutawney Phil Sees No Shadow.)

The story of Punxsutawney Phil is interesting enough as folklore, demonstrating the power of stories to create traditions. It also demonstrates the curious human habit of using animals of all varieties as sources of wisdom, in the form of morality tales to teach people some sort of lesson. In this case, a groundhog—also known as a woodchuck—has the ability to forecast how long winter will last. Read more…

Who Are You In Your Life Story?: Are You Your Only Hope For A Hero Or Are You Waiting For A Savior?

One of my favorite movies is Joe Vs The Volcano, a silly movie with bad reviews, which is also one of the profoundest movies I know. I’ll return to this story in other posts, but right now, I’ll quote only one line from the movie.

Who Will Be A Hero For The Waponis?

Joe has been sent to the island of Waponi Woo to save the people by jumping into a volcano on their behalf to save the island from destruction. It’s all about appeasing the volcano by offering up a willing human sacrifice to the volcano every hundred years. Read more…

Big Dreams To Change Your Life For Grownups

Of all the stories about the hero’s journey, why begin the Story Transformation Process with A Christmas Story? Why not begin with an analysis of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey? Why not start with obvious hero’s journey stories, such as “Star Wars” or “Indiana Jones”?

Ralphie, The Ordinary Child

It’s because Ralphie is an ordinary child. There’s nothing much remarkable about Ralphie. He’s an ordinary boy who wants to get an air rifle for Christmas. Ralphie is no boy wizard, with magical powers to transform his life. He doesn’t have a magic wand and a magic cloak, in a school where he learns the magic arts of transformation. He has no reputation that sets him apart, even from birth. Not Ralphie. Read more…

Keeping Your Big Dream Alive Despite The Dream Smashers

In A Christmas Story, Ralphie has a big dream. He wants to get his official “Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Air Rifle” for Christmas so he can be the hero he imagines himself to be.

He has his own vision of himself as the hero. There is nothing in his fantasy about getting an air rifle to bully people. He is not Scut Farkus. There is no desire to use the BB gun to hurt people—except the bad guys of course—or to bully others. In Ralphie’s heroic vision of himself, he will save his family from marauders. He will be brave. He will be the center of attention. Read more…

Who Has To Be A Hero To Save Ralphie From The Bully?

Who Are You In Your Life Story?: Hero, Bully, Toady, Or Victim? ended with this question. “So, who saves Ralphie from the bully?”

This question introduces the most important word in any heroic story—“saves.” Someone needs to be saved from someone or something. This means that heroic stories are salvation stories and every hero is a savior.

Who is Ralphie in A Christmas Story? The narrator tells us that children in Ralphie’s world have three roles to play. They are bullies, toadies, or victims. The missing role in this list is the hero, the one who saves the victims from the bullies and puts the toadies in their place. Read more…

Who Are You In Your Life Story?: Hero, Bully, Toady, Or Victim?

If you want to change your life, the place to begin is by figuring out who you are in your life story.

The Hero Saves His Family

In one of my favorite movies, A Christmas Story, young Ralphie wants an official “Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Air Rifle” for Christmas.

We find out why Ralphie wants the air rifle in one of his fantasy sequences. Ralphie, dressed in full Hollywood cowboy regalia, saves his family from attack from the dreaded Black Bart and his gang. Read more…
